Salt Album

In 2018, while working on the visual research project “Captain Anna, ” dedicated to women who command ships, Elena Anosova conducted a series interviews with residents of the Kaliningrad region and compiled a collection of photographs and stories titled “The Salty Album.” These images cross the boundaries of the personal for the first time, moving beyond the confines of family archives; they were presented at a small exhibition-meeting with local residents. By intertwining private stories and common patterns through the theme of human-animal relationships in the context of service and work at sea, Anosova creates an impetus for interest in family albums and humane treatment of animals. Many of the interviewees, heirs of family albums and participants in the meeting, raised similar unanswered questions: What happens to animals after a voyage is completed? How do terrestrial representatives of fauna cope with the motion of ships? Why are bears gifted to the crews of military vessels?
